Wireless "hotspots" in cafés and restaurantsthe WiFi service provided by hotels are increasingly common in the United States. Many cities in America free wireless Internet service is offered by the municipality. These services can be somewhat of a challenge to connect to for beginners and experts alike. In almost all cases, the network settings will remain exactly the same and should work in all of these environments.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Click "Start," then "Settings", then Control Panel. Select "Internet" and "Dialup connections to Windows 2000." (This section is labeled network connections for Windows XP and later).
- Highlight the connection to the wireless network with a single click of the left mouse button, click the right mouse button and choose "Properties". Now double click on the choice of Internet Protocol [TCP / IP]. (It may be that you need to scroll down, it is usually the choice of background).
- Click "radio" labeled "Obtain an IP address automatically" in the Properties dialog box Internet Protocol [TCP / IP]. Click the "radio button" labeled "obtain DNS server address automatically" and click "OK".
- Click "OK" in the properties box wireless network connection back to your windows desktop.Depending on the version of Windows you are running, you may need to restart your computer at this time.
- Open your browser (Internet Explorer, for example) and you should be greeted with what is known as a splash screen (usually an advertisement for the company providing the connection) or you need to be on the net.
- Make sure your computer is set to use DHCP by clicking on the icon apple, then "System Preferences" followed by "Network" and then clicking the TCP / IP tab. At the top of this window that the "configure" drop-down box should be set to "Using DHCP. '
- Click the airport icon (located immediately to the left of the volume control in the upper right corner of your menu bar) and select the network you want to connect to by name.
- Open your browser and you must be connected to the Internet.

In cases where connectivity free wireless internet was provided by your city or town, a slightly different configuration may be required and you will need to contact the people in charge of the network for information.
